Kokua Sells Out Minutes After Going On Sale
Minutes after tickets went on sale for the 5th annual Kokua Festival, featuring two acoustic shows with Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds, they were all sold out. The event has gotten bigger each year, and with the addition of Dave and Tim, locals were extremely excited to have their first opportunity to see Matthews live.
However, with plenty of interest from the mainland, the residents of Hawaii found it more difficult to buy tickets then they had previously thought.
Weston Yap of Kaimuki said that he and two groups of friends couldn't get onto the site for two hours. "I thought the festival was about getting local people to learn to be environmentally responsible, and supporting local sustainability. It's all Hawaii-oriented. It's not like I want to exclude people from the mainland ... but isn't this about trying to reach people who impact our environment? It'd be a shame if the people of Hawaii couldn't get in."
However, is this an issue between Hawaii's residents getting a chance to see Matthews live for the first time, or another one of DMB's continued efforts to reach a new audience and help spread more awareness on the issue of environmental safety?
DMB is no stranger though, to playing benefits for the the environment here on the mainland. Whether it's composing a score for a film, playing in a World wide concert for the environment, or playing a benefit concert for the expansion of Piedmont Park, DMB has played their part in spreading the word on global awareness.
There's still hope for locals trying to score last minute tickets, however - but it will cost you! The Bama Works foundation, DMB's own charity, is offering 2nd row tickets with all the proceeds going to the festival's charity works. You can place your bid here.
Since this is the first time that Matthews has performed in Hawaii, locals wish it would be harder for mainland residents to attend. However, DMB is still spreading the word and doing their part to make this a more environmentally friendly place to live.
Dave and Tim are currently set to play April 19th and 20th at the Waikiki Shell.
