Say Goodbye, Stefan Smashes Through a Window!

January 5th, 2004

A lot of important things happened for Dave Matthews Band in 1993. Keyboardist Peter Griesar left, Remember Two Things was released and they signed their first big recording contract with RCA/BMG.

This week's Davespeak comes from July 6th of that year. At Trax in Charlottesville, Dave debuted a new song called "Any Noise / Anti-Noise" which would later be recorded as "Say Goodbye" on Crash

Surprisingly, Stefan Lessard, DMB's bassist of nearly three years, was not there to help introduce the new tune. Greg Howard , a regular jazz performer at the Miller's in downtown Charlottesville sat in on bass for the show. Where was Stefan ?

“I'm going to do one more, then I'm going to ask my friend Carter to come out and funk it up the back beat. Cha-ba-bub, cha-ba-bub, cha-ba-bub, dup-eep! Because, Carter does it like that. Tonight is going to be a special evening, and also an evening--an evening, an evening dedicated to our friend Stefan Lessard who won't be able to be with us tonight, because he put his hand through a window. But, he'll be fine--he just can't play the bass guitar so he's with us in spirit. And we have a very special guest who's going to be with us tonight. Come-bunk-it-up Vah-faf-em, eiy-oooh!”
